During the cold winters of the Barcelona region of Spain during the late 19th century, the locals were having trouble keeping their celebratory wines from freezing as it was the festive season. Some even had to heat up the store rooms to keep food and drinks warm. In 1897, a young man named Fred Surigao, the son of a famous local grapes wine maker, came up with an innovation through which distilled wine can have a longer span before freezing point by going through series of heating processes. This was only able to keep the wine from freezing through the festive season and it was used mostly by Fred’s big family and the surrounding neighbours. Fred’s aim was to keep the spirit of the festivities alive with a wine the people can trust will withstand the unfavourable weather. It was not until 1944 when Fred’s granddaughter, Juan Fred-Surigao, was able to pull in science into the old family wine process and distilled wine that keeps its production temperature for all long as two seasons, winter or not. I was almost like it had flames within keep it warm. Starting locally in Barcelona, the Fred-Surigao wine spread across all of Spain, bring warmth to hearts of everyone as they all celebrate during the cold festive season, even until this day.
